Marvel: drop “Sabra” from your next film
Oppression is no superpower.
Marvel and Disney have chosen to glorify apartheid Israel with its new character “Sabra”, an Israeli agent created to serve the Mossad, the Israeli Secret Service in their next film.
Israel’s Mossad is an intelligence agency notorious for carrying out torture and extrajudicial assassinations.
Hollywood has made strides in representation -- but Marvel's normalization of the killing of Palestinians will be a giant step back for the movie studio.
Let Marvel studios know that whitewashing Israeli massacres is not OK!
At a time when consensus worldwide is growing that Israel is an apartheid state, Marvel is going against the tide.
The announcement of the movie and the character was made around the anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps massacre in Lebanon 40 years ago, where 3,500 Palestinian and Lebanese civilians were killed with assistance from the Israeli military. One of the worst atrocities in modern Middle Eastern history.
The only real powers Sabra has are: upholding colonialism, stealing Palestinian land, arresting Palestinian children, destroying Palestinian homes, bombing Palestinian neighbourhoods, surveilling Palestinians and controlling their every move.
Emma Watson, Susan Sarandon, Viola Davis are just some of the many Hollywood stars who have spoken out in defence of Palestinian rights. “The Hulk”, Mark Ruffallo, even shared SumOfUs’ petition calling for PayPal to stop discrimination of Palestinians making it go viral.
If many of us join them, Marvel and Disney will feel the heat and will be forced to cancel their plan to feature “Sabra” in their upcoming film.
Tell Marvel and Disney there is no place to glorify Israeli war crimes.
When we’ve come together we’ve managed to get big companies to respect Palestinian rights. General Mills, Ben and Jerry’s… let’s make Marvel the next!
